Forty-five minutes from Villamartín, the castle crowns Mount Benacantil and commands the whole bay of Alicante. At its foot climbs the Barrio de Santa Cruz, white houses on steep lanes.
A coastal path between Punta Prima and Cabo Roig: hidden coves, transparent water and sunsets over the sea. About twelve minutes by car from the villa.
Travelling with children or teenagers? Fifty-five minutes from Villamartín waits Terra Mítica: five themed areas built around Egypt, Greece, Rome and Iberia to fill a whole day in Benidorm.
A pink, almost fuchsia lagoon under twenty minutes away by car. Natural park, flamingos in winter and a sight you won't see anywhere else nearby.
The social heart of the neighbourhood, a 25-minute walk or 5 minutes by car from the villa: an open plaza of palm trees and mosaics, a resident parakeet colony and some thirty bars and restaurants.
A wetland half an hour by car from the villa: flamingos, white-headed ducks and total silence. One of the best birdwatching areas in Spain.
Just over an hour from Villamartín, the Algar river drops through the sierra in spring-fed falls and pools. Cold water year-round and a sure swim when the heat gets fierce.
The largest open-air shopping centre on the Costa Blanca. 150 shops, cinemas, restaurants and a children's area. About ten minutes by car from the villa.
The largest saltwater lagoon in Europe: shallow, warm waters famous for their therapeutic mud. About half an hour by car from the villa.
Just 20 minutes from Villamartín, Orihuela hides a 14th-century cathedral, episcopal palaces and the house of poet Miguel Hernández, all at the foot of its sierra. The area's least touristy cultural gem.
Five minutes from the villa, weekends fill with open-air stalls: seasonal fruit, clothes, ceramics and crafts amid the bustle of locals. Shopping the way it has always been done.
A different night out 55 minutes from Villamartín: dinner and a grand cabaret of feathers, ballet, magic and a live orchestra. It has run for almost half a century in Benidorm.
Inland near Busot, an hour from Villamartín, opens one of the tallest underground chambers in Spain. Huge stalactites and acoustics good enough to host concerts.
A boat from the coast, 35 minutes from Villamartín, drops you on the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community: marine reserve, walled old town and waters of an almost Caribbean turquoise.
Half an hour from Villamartín, Elche holds Europe's largest palm grove: over 200,000 palms planted by the Arabs and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, right inside the city.
Three thousand years of history in one city: Roman Carthago Nova, naval port and Modernist architecture. About fifty minutes by motorway from the villa.
Thermal baths with two thousand years of history in the Ricote Valley, beside the Segura river. Just over an hour by car from the villa, sulphurous water at 51 °C and a neo-Mudéjar palace — the classic spa escape in Murcia.
