Getting around Orihuela Costa: with a car and without

Do you need a car to enjoy Orihuela Costa? With the villa in Villamartín, it helps. Here are the options —airport, hire, bus and taxi— so you can decide.

One of the questions we hear most before you arrive is whether you need a car to enjoy Orihuela Costa. The honest answer: it depends on where you stay and what you’ve got planned. Villa Capitan sits in Villamartín, among the golf courses and about 5 km from the beaches — a short drive away — so here the natural way to get around is with a vehicle. That said, there are alternatives, and it’s worth knowing them all before you decide.

From Alicante airport (ALC)

Alicante-Elche airport is about 50 km from Villamartín, roughly 45 minutes by motorway. It’s the gateway for nearly every visitor. There are several ways to cover that final stretch: car hire (all the major companies are right inside the terminal), a private door-to-door transfer booked in advance, or a taxi from the official rank outside arrivals. We go through it step by step in our guide on how to get here from the airport.

With a hire car

This is the most comfortable option, and the one we recommend when you’re staying in Villamartín. It’s ideal for hopping between beaches, golf and padel courses, and above all for discovering the surrounding area without depending on timetables. The local roads are straightforward: the N-332 runs along the coast from north to south, and the AP-7 / A-7 connects quickly to Cartagena, Murcia or Alicante. The nearest beaches, like La Zenia or Cabo Roig, are about ten minutes away.

One reassuring detail: Villa Capitan has parking for two cars on the plot, so you come back from the beach, leave the car at the house and head straight into the private pool.

Without a car

It can be done, though it takes a little more planning. The villa isn’t on the beachfront — it’s about 5 km to the coast — so without a car you’ll lean on other options. There are local buses running along the coast that link La Zenia, Torrevieja and the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre; it’s worth checking the timetables on arrival, as frequency changes with the season. For groceries, Villamartín has supermarkets and a shopping plaza a stone’s throw away.

For one-off journeys — down to the beach, dinner out — a taxi is easy and convenient to call, and many guests choose to hire a car for just a few days, the ones with day trips, and spend the rest of their time enjoying the golf, the pool and the saunas without going anywhere.

Our advice

For a stay at Villa Capitan, having a car is the comfortable choice — even a hire car: it opens up the beaches, the inland towns and day trips like Guadalest, Cartagena, Elche or the Torrevieja salt lakes without relying on anyone. Those who’d rather not drive all the time tend to mix it up: quiet days at the villa and the golf, and the car booked only for the outings they really fancy.
