Costa Blanca with kids: family guide to Orihuela Costa

Coves where the water stays shallow, a private pool and plans for every age. Here's how we set up a relaxed family holiday from Villa Capitan, in Villamartín.

Travelling with children changes what actually matters: a pretty beach is no longer enough. You want water that stays shallow, shade within reach, a pool to round off the day and, above all, somewhere to stay with room to spare so nobody feels cramped. That’s where Orihuela Costa, with Playa Flamenca and its neighbouring coves, fits almost by accident what a family is after. Here’s how to line it all up without the stress.

Gently shelving coves for the little ones

The question every parent asks before letting the kids loose in the water: will it go over their heads? Many of the coves along this coast have fine sand and a very gradual slope, so the little ones can wade out for metres without losing their footing. Cala Mosca, Punta Prima and La Zenia are the names that come up first when family beaches are mentioned, all with a promenade, showers and beach bars right there so you can eat without trekking home. Each has its own character; we break them down in our guide to the best beaches for kids near Playa Flamenca.

The pool, the second playtime of the day

However much the beach grabs them, the pool usually ends up stealing the show on a family holiday: no car, no sand, the towel right there and a few steps from the bedroom. It works brilliantly mid-morning before lunch and, above all, in that hour before dinner when the little ones still have energy to burn. At Villa Capitan the pool is private, with a hydromassage section, so there’s no fighting for a sunbed and no fixed hours: if the beach wakes up windy one day, plan B is right inside the house.

Plans beyond the sand

When you fancy a change of scene, the area has it all. A few minutes’ drive away there are water and leisure parks worth a full day of slides. The largest shopping centre in the province is very close, with cinemas and dining for the days of extreme heat or wind. And if you want something quieter, the pink salt lakes of Torrevieja or a boat trip along the coast rarely fail with slightly older children. Beach in the morning, a siesta and an afternoon plan: the recipe nearly always works.

Safety without the fuss

Many of Orihuela Costa’s beaches fly the Blue Flag: clean water, well-kept access, lifeguards in season and toilets nearby. Even so, the usual common sense applies: swim in supervised areas, watch the flags, wear a hat and sunscreen, and keep the children hydrated often, especially at midday when shade is scarce. Bringing your own parasol never hurts. With those few precautions, a family beach day works out beautifully.

A villa for the whole family

With children, a place of your own beats a hotel hands down: a fully equipped kitchen to cook the dinner they’ll actually eat, a washing machine for the beach clothes, room not to be on top of one another and your own timetable without being tied to a buffet. Villa Capitan, in the Fortuna I urbanisation in Villamartín, is built for exactly that: three bedrooms each en-suite, sleeping up to six, a private pool with hydromassage, two saunas, a garden with a barbecue and a covered terrace for eating outside. The beaches are around 5 km away — barely a ten-minute drive — so the morning splits easily between sand and a trip back home.

You book directly with the owner, with no platform commission, a seven-night minimum and check-in from 15:00 (a €200 cleaning fee, no tourist tax). And if you’re unsure which cove or which plan suits your children’s ages best, write to us: we know the area inside out and we’ll help you build a holiday made for them.
