With children, the beach sets the tone for the whole day: you need fine sand, water that stays shallow for plenty of metres, some shade, toilets and somewhere nearby for a mid-morning snack. Happily, the stretch of coast around Playa Flamenca ticks exactly those boxes, and from Villa Capitan it’s a short drive away. These are the coves that respond best as a family.
Cala Mosca: a favourite with little ones
About a ten-minute drive from Villamartín, Cala Mosca is a golden-sand cove with a gentle, gradual slope into the water: children can stand for a good stretch and the waves are usually among the mildest around. It has a promenade, patches of natural shade and beach bars nearby so you can sort out lunch without going far. It’s the classic towel-and-bucket-and-spade plan that never fails with small kids.
Punta Prima beach: wide and fully serviced
Punta Prima beach is among the most complete in the area: fine sand, a generous expanse for children to run free, a lifeguard in season, showers, sun-lounger hire and a promenade packed with cafés and ice-cream parlours. Being open and so well equipped, it lets you set up camp and spend the whole day with nothing missing.
La Zenia: golden sand and a family feel
A little further south, La Zenia rolls out two golden-sand coves with calm water and a very family atmosphere. There’s parking nearby, beach services and, as a bonus, the province’s largest shopping centre a stone’s throw away: if a shower comes down or the heat bites, you have an instant plan B. This and other options are in our guide to the beaches of Orihuela Costa, with a map and distances.
What makes these beaches safe
A good number of the beaches in Orihuela Costa fly the Blue Flag, an award that rates water quality, cleanliness, safety and facilities. For a family that means clean water, lifeguards in high season, well-kept access points and toilets nearby. Even so, don’t forget the basics: swim in the supervised zones, watch the flags, wear a hat and sun cream, and keep the children hydrated often. Shade is scarce at midday, so bringing your own parasol always helps.
Villa Capitan, a good base for the beach plan
For a beach day to come off perfectly, it helps to have a base with room for the children to rest and a comfortable trip to the sea. Villa Capitan, in the Fortuna I urbanisation in Villamartín, is around 5 km from the coves — a ten-minute drive — so the morning splits easily between sand and a trip back home. And on your return a private pool with hydromassage, a garden with a barbecue and plenty of room await: the villa has three en-suite bedrooms and sleeps up to six people.
You book directly with the owner, with no platform commission, a seven-night minimum and check-in from 3 pm. And if you’re unsure which cove suits your children’s ages best, message us: we know every beach inside out and we’ll help you plan.
