Winter sun on the Costa Blanca: Orihuela Costa

Mild winters, almost 300 days of sun a year and everything within reach. Here's why more and more travellers choose Orihuela Costa to escape the cold.

There’s a point each autumn when half of Europe dims: less light, more damp and an almost physical longing to slip away somewhere winter feels like a spring that keeps going. Good news: that somewhere isn’t a fantasy, and it’s closer than it looks. We’re talking about the far south of the province of Alicante — Orihuela Costa — which lays claim to one of the gentlest winters on the continent.

Almost 300 days of sun a year

This isn’t marketing, it’s statistics: it’s the key to why so many retirees from the UK, Germany and northern Europe make their winter base here. Picture eating outdoors on any old January day, strolling the seafront promenade in short sleeves at noon and gazing at a flat sea under a clean sky. At night the thermometer rarely drops below 10 °C, and in the midday sun it usually pushes past 17–18 °C.

Behind that microclimate lies geography: sheltered from cold winds and with no heavy industry or shipping traffic nearby, the area breathes clean air and basks in that very coastal light almost from dawn to dusk — up in Villamartín too, ringed by golf courses.

More than sun: a comfortable life all year round

A long winter stay only pays off if the destination has its own pulse out of season, and Orihuela Costa has plenty. Here the supermarkets don’t pull the shutters, there are health centres, the province’s largest shopping centre sits minutes away, markets pop up every week and the restaurants stay open when the crowds thin out. Settle in for a few months and your daily life is covered without reaching for the car at every turn.

And when the urge to get out strikes? Options abound: work your way along the beaches of Orihuela Costa, many of them Blue Flag and linked by a coastal path; book a court at the area’s golf and padel venues; or set aside a day to explore the surroundings, from the pink salt lagoons of Torrevieja to the inland villages.

Villamartín: where to stay for a long break

Over a season, the accommodation makes the difference, and Villamartín has just what a winter stay calls for: a quiet residential setting, elevated and ringed by golf courses, with services close at hand and the beaches about ten minutes away by car. It’s one of those areas where the quiet is tangible and the day goes a long way.

This is where Villa Capitan sits, built precisely for settling in for months with space and comfort. It’s 300 m² over three floors, with three en-suite bedrooms, a fireplace lounge, a study and a Bosch kitchen, plus a private pool with hydromassage and two saunas — Turkish and wood-fired — for the cooler days. The covered terrace lets you eat outside even in January, and there’s room to spare for up to six, in case visitors come.

How to book for the season

In winter the villa starts at €200 a night, with a seven-night minimum and a €200 end-of-stay cleaning fee; there’s no tourist tax. For those coming to spend several weeks or a couple of months in the sun, the best move is to write with your dates so we can look at it case by case. You book directly with the owner, with no platform commission, and we look after you in your own language before, during and after your stay.

Tempted to leave winter’s grey behind for the light of the Mediterranean? Tell us about it and we’ll tailor it to you. There’s a reason Orihuela Costa has spent decades as the secret shared among those who already know where the cold season is best spent.
